Locks
of Love helps children with medical hair loss achieve crucial
self-esteem and confidence
Locks of Love, based in Palm Springs, Florida, is a not-for-profit
organization formed for the purpose of providing hairpieces
for children afflicted with medical hair loss
Locks of Love provides these custom-fitted hair prosthetics
for long-term medical hair loss free of charge or on a sliding
scale to financially disadvantaged children. Donors provide
the hair, volunteers staff the office, and the manufacturer
hand-assembles each piece at exact cost, requiring approximately
four months.
Locks of Love has identified and begun processing over 50
recipients of the high quality, human hair prosthetics while
more than 15,000 bundles of donated hair poured in from around
the country. Bundles of hair arrive daily at Locks of Love as
a result of national publicity in newspapers and on local television
stations throughout the country. Most donors mail a note and
a photo along with their bundle of hair. Children comprise about
75 percent of the donors, making this a charity where children
have the opportunity to help other children.
Locks of Love provides long-term medical hair loss recipients
with a custom, vacuum-fitted hairpiece made entirely from human
hair. The vacuum fit is designed for children who have experienced
a total loss of scalp hair and does not require the use of tape
or glue.
Donated hair is evaluated for its usefulness according to
the following guidelines:
- The donated hair must be at least 10 inches (preferably
12") in length
- It must be bundled in a pony tail or braid
- It must be free of hair damaged by chemical processing
- The hair must be clean and dry, placed in a plastic bag,
and mailed in a padded envelope to:

Monetary donations to the Locks of Love organization are tax
deductible. Some donated hair may be sold at fair market value
to offset the
cost of manufacturing.
